Like all typical redstarts it is strongly sexually dimorphic: breeding males have a grey crown and nape with a lighter forehead and crown sides, a black face and chin, a brownish mantle and wings and a large white wing patch, with the chest, lower back and rump orange and the tail black with orange sides (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is migratory; the nominate subspecies winters in Korea, Japan, south-east coastal China and Taiwan, and leucopterus in north-east India and parts of Southeast Asia. It breeds in the summer months (Wikipedia, general species account).
