Diet

Habitat
Tropical moist lowland forest; forages on the ground in the understory
Range
Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and surrounding islands
The mourning babbler, previously the short-tailed babbler, is a bird in the ground babbler family Pellorneidae, found in the Malay Peninsula, the Anambas Islands, Sumatra, the Banyak, Batu, Riau and Lingga Islands and the Natuna Islands. It was formerly considered the same species as the glissando babbler and the leaflitter babbler. It is generally solitary, not joining larger mixed-species flocks, and forages in the understory on the ground on beetles, grasshoppers and ants (Wikipedia, general species account).
Like other babblers it uses its foot to grasp food items, an unusual behaviour for passerine birds. It is locally common at a number of places but is considered near-threatened because of the loss of lowland forest in its range (Wikipedia, general species account).
