The Oriental pied hornbill is a large canopy-dwelling bird of the hornbill family, among the smallest and most common of the Asian hornbills, 55–60 cm long, with a bill of 19 cm in males and 16 cm in females. The head, neck, back, wings and upper breast are black with a slight green sheen, and the tail is black with white tips on all feathers except the central pair. The sexes are similar, and juveniles resemble the adults but have an undeveloped casque and a smaller bill. It has the largest distribution in its genus. Its calls are described as crow-like, braying, or harsh crackles and screeches.
