The grey plover, called the black-bellied plover in North America, is a large plover that breeds in Arctic regions and is a long-distance migrant with a nearly worldwide coastal distribution when not breeding. It is 27 to 30 cm long with a wingspan of 71 to 83 cm and weighs 190 to 280 g, up to 345 g before migration. In summer adults are spotted black and white on the back and wings (Wikipedia, general species account).
Three subspecies are recognised, breeding in north Eurasia and Alaska, on Wrangel Island, and in north Canada (Wikipedia, general species account).
