Chelonia mydas
Diet
Seagrasses (adults mostly herbivorous)
Habitat
Shallow lagoons; tropical and subtropical seas
Range
Tropical and subtropical seas worldwide, including the Indian Ocean
The green sea turtle is a large sea turtle and the only species in its genus, found throughout tropical and subtropical seas, including the Indian Ocean. The name refers to the usually green fat beneath the shell, from a diet of seagrass, not to the carapace, which is olive to black. The flattened body is covered by a large teardrop-shaped carapace and it has a pair of large paddle-like flippers. It is the only aquatic turtle that is herbivorous when fully grown (Wikipedia, general species account).
Adults usually live in shallow lagoons and feed mostly on seagrasses. Like other sea turtles they migrate long distances between feeding grounds and hatching beaches. Females come ashore at night to dig nests and lay eggs, and hatchlings scramble into the sea. Those that reach maturity may live to 90 years in the wild (Wikipedia, general species account).
