The booted eagle is a small eagle about 40 cm long, mostly migratory, with a wide distribution in the Palearctic and southern Asia and wintering in the tropics of Africa and Asia. A small separate population breeds in south-western Africa. It has no recognised subspecies, and the species name is Latin for feathered. Some authors have moved it into the genus Aquila along with other hawk-eagles, though it is the type species of Hieraaetus (Wikipedia, general species account).
