Breeds on the coasts of the Bering Sea; winters in Southeast Asia
The spoon-billed sandpiper is a small wader that breeds on the coasts of the Bering Sea and winters in Southeast Asia. Its most distinctive feature is its spatulate bill. It is highly threatened: the breeding population is said to have decreased significantly since the 1970s, and by 2000 was estimated at 350–500 birds (Wikipedia, general species account).
